Did you know that there are some very famous female pirates? Anne Bonny is probably one of the most famous and she got what she wanted from life no matter what. She stabbed, she burned, and she ransacked her way through the Caribbean with no remorse. Mary Read was an English pirate and was a comrade of Anne Boony’s. These two fiery women were partners in crime on the high seas and together they raised havoc for many a year.
The classic pirate flag, known as the Jolly Roger flag, has a black background with a white skull and crossbones. There’s no doubt that this flag was designed to be very scary but it was not used by all pirates. It was only used by those pirates who sailed in the Spanish Main.
Dutch pirates were often referred to as Sea Beggars – I love that name! Pirates very frequently used parrots to bribe officials, they typical plunder was of tobacco and silks, and they really did have wooden legs. They dressed very extravagantly in silks, velvets, and taffeta’s that they stole from the wealthy. Pirate captains did not have to be educated – all they had to do was win the most votes in the election!
